Question:

Can a person commit kufr (disbelief) whilst upon his tongue is laa ilaaha ill Allah (none has the right to be worshipped in Truth except Allah)?

Answer:

A person can indeed become a disbeliever in front of Allah whilst he says la ilaaha ill Allah.

And this is just like the hypocrite who said la ilaaha ill Allah with his tongue and he did not believe with his heart, such as Abdullah ibn Abee Sulool and the like of him.

And with Allah is the tawfeeq. And may peace ...

Question:

Is it permissible to declare a Jew or a Christian to be a kaafir (disbeliever)?

Answer:

It is permissible for a Muslim to say that a Jew or a Christian is a kaafir because Allah has described them with this attribute in the Qur'an. And this is known to the person who reflects upon the Qur'an. From this is His - the most High – statement:

Indeed those who disbelieved (kafaroo) from the People of the Book and the Polytheists are in the Fire of Hell to reside therein ...

Question:

We wish to know what is the ruling upon the person who does not pass the verdict of disbelief (kufr) upon a person who is a kafir?

Answer:

For a person whose kufr is firmly established, it is obligatory to have the belief of his kufr (i.e. that he is upon kufr), and to pass the ruling upon him according to this and for the Muslim ruler to establish the punishment of apostasy upon him - providing that this person has not repented.

And whoever does not declare the ...

Question:

It is said that ridda (apostasy) can be either fi’liyyah (through actions) or qawliyah (through statement). It is hoped that you can explain for me in a brief and clear manner the types of apostasy related to 1) action 2) speech and 3) belief?

Question:

What is your opinion in regards to the statement of the one who says: Indeed one who comitts shirk and kufr is not declared to be an unbeliever, except after him having knowledge of the affair in its entirety?

Answer:

If the likes of this person is ignorant, due to him residing in a land which is cut off and nothing has reached him, then he is excused [for his ignorance]. As for the one who lives in the land of the Muslims, hearing the Qu'ran, hearing the Ahadeeth, hearing ...

What are the conditions and requirements of making takfîr (passing a judgement that a Muslim has left the fold of Islâm and has become a disbeliever), and what is the ruling regarding a person who commits an act of kufr (disbelief) in jest?

Answer:

The ruling about making takfîr upon a Muslim is dependant upon two conditions:-

Firstly: That the proof has been established that this is a matter which is from disbelief (i.e. which can cause a person to become a disbeliever).

Secondly: ...
